Edinburgh Q-Step to host Festival of Social Science Event

Local secondary-level education students will be invited to the University of Edinburgh on the 13 November 2015 to experience a typical afternoon at university and to explore how they might combine an interest in maths and social science during their studies at university.

Using maths for social and political studies

Local secondary-level education students are invited to join the Q-Step team at the University of Edinburgh on the afternoon of 13 November 2015 to experience a typical afternoon at university and to explore how they might combine an interest in maths and social and political science during their studies at university.

We expect our participants to gain:

•    The understanding that you can combine an interest in maths and social science during your studies at university;
•    An understanding of the range of ways that numbers can be used and applied in the field of social science;
•    An experience that will show them that applying maths to social science situations is fun, useful and interesting;
•    The opportunity to meet pupils from other schools in Edinburgh;
•    A taster of a typical afternoon at the University of Edinburgh.

Why come to our event?

We have a large body of staff and student helpers who are so enthused by what they do that they all want to be part of this event and share their knowledge and enthusiasm with local school pupils. From professors, to students currently studying our undergraduate ‘with quantitative’ methods degrees, we have a committed group of individuals applying their skills and experience to make this event fantastic. Our event is entirely interactive, consisting mainly of groupwork, using the latest technology to give live online results that will be beamed across the lecture hall. We aim to inspire a whole new group of quantitative social scientists and, of course, encourage them to come and study with us at the University of Edinburgh.
