New year, new Q-Step Research seminars

We are looking forward to a semester jam-packed with Q-Step Research Seminars from January to June.

The new semester will be kicked off by Jacques-Antoine Gauthier on 25th January. Jacques-Antoine is a visiting fellow, coming to Edinburgh from the Life Course and Social Inequality Research Center (LINES) at the University of Lausanne. He will introduce us to applications of sequence comparison, an analytical method to capture time related phenomena such as family patterns, sequences of occupation, residence or even health trajectories. Jacques-Antoine's seminar will take place on 25th January from 13:00 - 14:15 in the Practice Suite (1.12) of the Chrystal Macmillan Building.

In cooperation with the Quantitative Criminology Research Group (QCRG) at the School of Law we will welcome Nema Dean and Ben Rosher from Glasgow University as well as Ellie Bates from the School of Law on Monday, 29th January. The three will present their pilot work on open source police recorded violence in South Yorkshire, in which they explored crime distributions with k-means clustering. This seminar takes place on 29th January from 14:00 - 15:15 (an hour later than our usual slot!) in the 6th floor Staff Room of the Chrystal Macmillan Building.

On 6th February, Orian Brook from the College of Art will talk about her work on social mobilty in cultural and creative occupations. Together with colleagues Orian is analysing cohort and longitudinal data to evaluate whether or not the creative industries are indeed a force for openness and social mobility in Britain. Orian will present her work on 6th February from 13:00 - 14:15 in the Practice Suite (1.12) of the Chrystal Macmillan Building.

In March, visiting professor Kim McCabe will join us from Lynchburg College in Virginia. Kim is currently the chair of the department of Criminology. Her talk is scheduled to take place on 6th March from 13.00 - 14.15 in the 6th floor staff room of the Chrystal Macmillan Building.

Later in March our Q-Step PhD student Dominique Green will present her doctoral research. Dominique works with big datasets, analysing whether or not poverty can be conceptualised as social exclusion in the United States. Dominque's seminar will take place on 20th March from 13.00 - 14.15 in the Practice Suite (1.12) of the Chrystal Macmillan Building

On 3rd April Jean-Benoit Falisse from the Centre of African Studies will present his research. Jean-Benoit works on questions concerning the provision of basic social services (healthcare, education, justice) in the Great Lakes region in Africa. He will talk about his work using quantitative methods in the field. His seminar will take place on 3rd April from 13:00 - 14:15 in the Practice Suite (1.12) of the Chrystal Macmillan Building.

We are also looking forward to Q-Step PhD students, Sarah WeakleySarah Christison and Taya Collyer presenting their PhD research later in the year. Please keep an eye out on our Events page for abstracts and room details or sign up for our mailing list.
