Spring is coming - Q-Step Research Seminar Series continues

Snow and strikes are over - for now! With Spring on the horizon we are looking forward to continuing our Q-Step Research Seminar Series until the end of the academic year. Here is what we have in store for you:

On 3rd April Jean-Benoit Falisse from the Centre of African Studies will present his research. Jean-Benoit works on questions concerning the provision of basic social services (healthcare, education, justice) in the Great Lakes region in Africa. He will talk about his work using quantitative methods in the field. His seminar will take place on 3rd April from 13:00 - 14:15 in the Practice Suite (1.12) of the Chrystal Macmillan Building.

On 8th May our Q-Step PhD student Dominique Green will present her doctoral research. Dominique works with big datasets, analysing whether or not poverty can be conceptualised as social exclusion in the United States. Dominque's seminar will take place on 8th May from 13.00 - 14.15 in the Practice Suite (1.12) of the Chrystal Macmillan Building

With Sarah Christison another of our PhD students will present her research on May 22nd. In her work Sarah is looking to evaluate the accuracy of population estimates for small areas in Scotland, a statistical puzzle many of us would like to see solved. Sarah's seminar will take place on 22nd May from 13.00 - 14.15 in the Practice Suite (1.12) of the Chrystal Macmillan Building.

Visiting professor Kim McCabe was scheduled to join us in March, but snow made it impossible for her to come to Edinburgh. Let's hope we will have more luck in May! Kim joins us from Lynchburg College in Virginia, where she is currently the chair of the department of Criminology. She will share insights on her research about social action and human trafficking and also how she uses this research to teach statistics to her undergraduate students. Her talk is scheduled to take place on 23rd May from 13.00 - 14.15 in the 6th floor staff room of the Chrystal Macmillan Building.

We are also looking forward to another Q-Step PhD student, Sarah Weakley, to present the outcomes of her PhD research on government assistance and young people's transitions into economic independence. Sarah compares longitudinal data from the UK and the US and will share her findings with us. Sarah's seminar will take place on 5th June from 13.00 - 14.15 in the Practice Suite (1.12) of the Chrystal Macmillan Building.

All researchers, teaching staff, postgraduate and undergraduate students are welcome to the seminars!

Please contact us now if you would like to present your research in a seminar in the next academic year and please keep an eye out on our Events page for abstracts and room details or sign up for our mailing list.
