Q-Step Summer School in collaboration with Headstart: Maths and Statistics in the Social Sciences at Edinburgh

How are statistics used – and abused – in the world of government, the media and in business? Want to transform your numerical and analytical capabilities?

Headstart at Edinburgh is for those who are interested in using maths and statistics in the worlds of government and business as a career. You may be interested in a degree in sociology, social policy or politics and international relations – or to become a lawyer or a social worker or a school teacher - but don’t want to stop using your mathematical skills. We cover how maths and statistics are used across a range of the social sciences to help you make an informed decision.

What’s it all about?

The course will begin to develop key scientific skills such as teamwork and problem solving to help you make more of your time at university. This Headstart Maths and Statistics in Social Science course, hosted by the School of Social and Political Science at the University of Edinburgh, will enable participants to explore how cutting edge social science uses mathematics to explore the social world. The course contains a good mix of practical team activities, lectures and discussion which cut across a number of disciplines including Sociology, Social Policy, Politics and International Relations, Law and Education. Participants also gain an awareness of the range of undergraduate courses available at Edinburgh and an insight into potential career opportunities for social science graduates with maths skills.

What will I be doing?

  • Practical real world problem solving
  • Attend lectures, debates and discussion groups
  • Visit the Scottish Government
  • Meet current students, both undergraduates and post graduates
