Mathematical expressions are very rarely the topic of linguistic or sociological analysis. However, across the disciplines a huge volume of empirical work is enabled via a shared understanding of the meaning of the regression equation. In this seminar, Taya Collyer will take us on a journey to look at what we actually mean when we speak about the regression equation.
The dual aims of this presentation are to 1) Thoroughly explore the full equation in a manner accessible to students and researchers of all statistical literacies; and 2), to argue that while the mathematical meaning of the equation is important and concrete, of equal (or greater) importance are the diverse meanings researchers and students hold in their minds when they work either directly or indirectly with the equation. Finally, the role of technology in obscuring and distorting the equation's meaning will be explored in brief. This presentation is aimed at anyone who has ever studied, taught, or employed regression techniques. We particularly welcome all new and returning Q-Step students!
This seminar will take place on 25th September, from 13.00-14.15 in the Practice Suite (1.12) on the first floor of the Chrystal Macmillan Building.
