We in the School of Social and Political Science have been listening to employers about what skills they want our graduates to have. One of the most requested skills is Data Analysis. Using quantitative methods (statistics), we social scientists learn to understand, analyse and interpret data. Data comes from many sources: health; education; government; welfare, tax and benefits; employment and unemployment; demography; social surveys; social media and the internet, amongst many others. The amount of data in the world is increasing and we want our students to be ready and able for this growing job market. So, what can we offer you?
The School of Social and Political Science has four new degree programmes:
- International Relations with Quantitative Methods
- Politics with Quantitative Methods
- Social Policy with Quantitative Methods
- Sociology with Quantitative Methods
These degrees take the existing social science subjects and add a quantitative methods component. Additionally, as part of these new degrees, we are offering you the opportunity to take up paid placements with top local employers, e.g. Scottish Government, Royal Bank of Scotland, ScotCen, NHS Scotland, and various charities, amongst others.
We are looking for first year students who would like to transfer to one of these degrees in second year. To do this you must:
1) have A-level/Higher Maths at Grade B or international equivalent; and
2) complete a paid* 10-day conversion course from 25 May – 5 June 2015 (you will receive a stipend of £360*).
For further information and how to apply, please contact me, Alison Koslowski at alison.koslowski@ed.ac.uk. Applications are due by 15 March 2015.
*The first 15 applicants accepted on to the conversion course will be eligible for the stipend.
