'Scotland by Numbers' Teaching Resources

Dear secondary school teacher. You are invited to use 'Scotland by Numbers' teaching resources to introduce your students (S4/S5/S6) to a range of data sources, research methods, and social and demographic trends in Scotland. These interactive resources include slideshows, videos, learning activities and quizzes, all designed to promote secondary school students' ability to critically evaluate statistical findings from social research and explore how data can help us understand the world around us.

  • This resource includes a slideshow that provides a brief introduction to key crime statistics sources in Scotland and demonstrates how data helps us understand trends in crime. It will get your students thinking about crime in Scotland, while also developing an understanding of social research methods and ways of presenting data, for example in charts, graphs, and percentages.
  • Teacher's 'notes' are included below each slide and provide links, fun facts, ideas for group discussions, and optional class or take-home activities. There are also links to videos, but these are optional, so there’s no need to arrange special IT equipment or connection to the internet in order to use this slideshow effectively. Please feel free to use this material as you see fit, including editing the content or using only parts of the slideshow.
  • This resource also includes a quiz which consolidates and assesses the learning process. The questions in this quiz cover a wide range of themes including trends and types of crime, youth and crime, and public perceptions of crime and safety. It takes about 10 minutes to complete this quiz. We also included an answers sheet, for your convenience.
